What kinds of productions do you work on most? All my work is episodic television. Well, 99 percent of my work! What VELVETs do you typically use? I own 3 of the Mini 3s and one Mini 2. I’ll get second one soon. And then two Mini 1s. And I use the Power 2x2s – a lot. I started using them first as spacelights, and then I put one on the ground, and the power for the size kind of blew me away.When I started The Orville (FOX), I had about 16 of them. Originally, I stuck them up high to punch through these muslin ceiling pieces we had, because I needed bicolor ambience. What are some of the standard ways you use VELVETS? You know. . .wait. . .you know, I use them for everything. I use the crap out of these lights. I use them all day long, constantly.I use the Mini 2 and 3 a lot as a key and fill. I’d use them a lot with close-ups because of that directional but soft side-wrap. I might have a bigger LED source through a 12×12 or 8×8, and then I use the Minis to wrap around. I would take two to punch through an 8×8 full grid diffusion. I started pushing them through windows too. I was so amazed at the punch, the effectiveness for the wattage that we had. John, what sort of productions do you work on?Mostly episodics. I’ve been working on Agents of Shield for five seasons, and then a PBS series called Mercy Street for two seasons. That’s been my hiatus show. What is your VELVET lighting package on Agents of Shield?We have VELVET 1s, VELVET 2s, one VELVET Power 1, and we are carrying four VELVET Power 2x2s. Oh – and six VELVET Mini 1s. Why did you start incorporating VELVETs into your workflow?I wanted to upgrade and modernize. When LEDs started happening, I thought “It’s ridiculous to carry all this cable with all the technology available.” We demoed everything on the market five years ago, and VELVETs won, hands down. When I bought them, they weren’t even selling here yet. I had to change dollars into Euros. I started using VELVETs season one, so basically now it’s been five seasons of Agents of Shield. Have VELVETs made your job easier and much faster?It’s a lighter head than the competition, compared to the output. And, the ability to be battery operated – We run the VELVET 1s around all day with a battery and wireless DMX. We even use our transmitters on location. It makes the workflow so much faster, especially on the episodics. We can sit at the DIT monitor and adjust, as opposed to one of my guys going in there under a table to drop in a double and getting yelled at by the AD. It’s amazing. It makes us blazingly fast. Lighting the NOS Netherlands News Studio

NOS Dutch Broadcast Foundation is The Netherlands public broadcaster for sports and news. Following the style and layout renovation started in 2012 on many of its programs NOS has completely upgraded its studio 8 & 10 including several control rooms. A flexible light project The new studio 8 light design was challenging as the lighting needed to be flexible enough to light the prime time news program with one or two presenters but also be used for interviews, debates around a table and also for the weather program, while every scene was going to be recorded by three cameras on pedestals plus a camera suspended from the ceiling on a remote control round track dolly plus telescoping system to produce wide moving shots. After extensive tests with many light fixtures the light designer Bas de Vries decided to completely light the studio using LED sources mainly based on soft light from VELVET Light 2 STUDIO panels combined with ARRI L7-DT Fresnels for studio 8 and in combination with ARRI L5-DT Fresnels for studio 10. Also a mix of LED wall washers, pixelbars and LED zoom par fixtures were delivered to complete the set. During the installation and light adjustment Bas contacted THELIGHT-VELVET asking for a smoother dimming curve to specially mimic the fade in and fade out of traditional tungsten light. Following THELIGHT policy to provide custom solutions for every project special requirements, their software engineers developed a custom algorithm with a special dimming curve that was quickly uploaded on the VELVET panel by Controllux technicians by simply updating the Firmware. At Denmark SBS TV has made a new studio for a baking competition show and THELIGHT has been the chosen lighting provider which installation has been made by its authorized dealer Bico Professionel A/S. Project requirements Heat-free light to keep the food in perfect conditions along the show High quality light to get crisp real colours and perfect skin tones Shadow-less overhead space light Powerful and long through lights to be used at 5 meters high Easy to setup light system to be used in several set ups A very soft and natural base light has been achieved by displaying arrays of 4LONG-STUDIO fixtures overhead. The efficiency of THELIGHT fixtures produce so much light power that the light designer was able to double diffuse them even when used at 5 meter high to get a wealthy base light level for the show. The main base light has been made by lighting several 4LONG-STUDIO fixtures through the set ceiling cloth diffuser and a combination of THELIGHT and tungsten fixtures has been used as key light for the actors. THELIGHT can be easily mixed with tungsten or daylight sources thanks to the tunable colour temperature, dimmer and green/magenta correction. The full DMX remote control allows on the fly colour temperature and light intensity changes while simplified rigging and cabling make light or set changes quick. The show presenters clearly feel the difference over the old tungsten lighting: THELIGHT produce no heat light. THELIGHT has been selected as the unique lighting provider to illuminate the Main Conference Hall at NATO Headquarters in Brussels. The Main Conference Hall is where the “Family portrait” of the NATO Ministers of Defense takes place regularly and since April 2013 is the first illuminated exclusively using LED technology. The technical department needed to replace the old arrays of 2500W HMI units hanging from the ceiling to light from 8 meters away the 9 by 4 meters podium were the NATO Ministers and officers pose for the international television and press cameras. A high color rendering index as well as a non-disturbing and soft light was an essential requirement while the goal was a reduction in the operational cost and a simplified maintenance. Project requirements Simplify the installation with no ballast or separate power supply Instant start and remote dimming Reduce maintenance to avoid replacing lamps and gels Reduce electric power consumption Homogeneous shadow-less light 600 Lux at 8 meters distance High CRI to get perfect skin tones using both HD and photo cameras The HMI fixtures required regular maintenance replacing lamps and gels and its long time ignition produce some difficulties on the NATO Ministers tight schedule. The old 2500W HMI lights has been completely replaced by arrays of 4LONG-STUDIO fixtures hanging from the ceiling.
